About Jamie Coreth

Jamie Coreth (b. 1989) is a British portrait artist whose work bridges classical realist painting and contemporary figurative art. Recognised as one of the leading contemporary portrait artists of his generation, his oil paintings are defined by technical mastery, compositional clarity and psychological presence.

Rather than relying on overt symbolism, Coreth allows meaning to emerge through gesture, presence and a nuanced handling of light. His portraits are carefully constructed to create the illusion that the sitter occupies real space behind the canvas.

Coreth read Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Oxford before undertaking rigorous training in realist oil painting at the London Atelier of Representational Art, Charles Cecil Studios and the Florence Academy of Art.

At the Florence Academy, he was awarded the Painting of the Year prize and taught art history alongside his studio practice; a foundation that continues to inform his work as a contemporary realist painter.

In 2016, Coreth was awarded the Young Artist Award at the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, London, for Dad Sculpting Me. The judges noted the painting’s timeless treatment of a father–son relationship observed through art.

He was subsequently selected for the BP Portrait Exhibition with Broken Bodies (2018). In 2020, Portrait of Fatima was shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award, chosen for the exhibition catalogue cover and the Gallery’s marketing campaign, and later won the Visitors’ Choice Award.

Also in 2020, Coreth won first place in a national competition issued by the National Portrait Gallery to compose an image in the style of Cecil Beaton, in line with their exhibition on The Bright Young Things.

In 2021, Coreth completed the first official joint portrait of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales. His broader practice includes royal portrait commissions, institutional works and private family portrait commissions, with paintings held and exhibited internationally.
